2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Release Date

Prior to the L.A. Auto Show, we were dying with anticipation to finally see the new Mustang-inspired EV crossover and reveal of its proper name the Ford Mustang Mach-E. We aren't exactly sure how long after the debut until the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E begins production, but estimates indicate the Mach-E to be released later in 2020 as it is labeled for the 2021 lineup.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Price & Trims

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a starting price of $43,895 for the base model and comes with 5 trim levels: Select, Premium, California Route 1, Limited First Edition, and GT. Moving up from the base Mach-E Select, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E Premium starts at $50,600 and the Mach-E California Route 1 starts at $52,400. For the higher trim levels, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mache-E Limited First Edition starts at $59,900 while the top of the line 2021 Mach-E GT has a starting price tag of $60,500. On top of these prices, you may qualify for as much as $7,500 in federal tax incentives for purchasing an all-electric Ford vehicle in 2020. This means that the Tesla Model Y will have some competition. Even though these two models will share common price points, the Mustang Mach-E will be closer to the size of a Tesla Model X instead.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Exterior

For a while, we only had teaser images and a few concept renderings to look at, but now we have a full look at the exterior of the all-electric Mustang crossover. First, we see the grille with a hexagonal shape, similar to the iconic Mustang but taller like that of the Edge and other Ford SUVs. Most Mach-E trims come with black plastic fender flares but the higher trim levels featured the same body color applied to the fender flares. The front-end design clearly screams Mustang but as you move towards the rear, the design begins to round out and square off like a sportback or hatchback. Currently, there are 7 exterior color choices: Rapid Red, Star White, Infinite Blue, Carbonized Gray, Shadow Black, Iconic Silver, and Space White.

Mach-E Inspirations Inherited from the Mustang

What we can see so far are some clear cues that the Mustang heritage is alive and active in the Mach-E design. Aside from the classic Pony emblem, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E clearly features a fastback roofline, wide headlights, specialized headlight animation, and a unique shape. Maybe it is a crossover, but nobody told this vehicle. It still screams muscle car.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Interior Features

The upcoming 2021 Mustang Mach-E features an interior for the future connected with seamless technology designed to prove a completely unique, personalized driving experience. Equipped with PhoneAs A Key, the Mach-E will recognize you as you approach the vehicle and automatically start adjusting seats, mirrors, radio stations, interior lighting, and the instrument panel just the way you configured it. The design of the interior feels less cluttered and features 2 big digital displays on the front dash. Behind the steering wheel is the smaller instrument panel while the larger, tablet shaped 15.5-inch touch screen display is mounted ahead of the center console. The 2021 Mach-E features the next generation of Ford SYNC® technology. Next-gen SYNC® highlights include voice activation, cloud-connected navigation, customizable cluster screen, modem-based over-the-air updates, and the ability to locate your next charging location. The Mach-E also comes with a convenient front trunk to step up your adventure game. The front trunk adds 4.8 ft3 of water-resistant storage space featuring a convenient drain making it an ideal cooler for tailgating or camping.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Battery & EV Range

The Intelligent Range predictive technology instrument cluster view included inside the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E *Ford Mustang Mach-E Intelligent Range technology shown.

One thing isn't a mystery - the Mustang Mach-E should come with at least 300-miles of electric range. The Mach-E Select has an EPA-estimated range of 230 miles while the mid-level trims (Premium, California Route 1) feature the 300-mile range. The limited run First Edition Mach-E is estimated to achieve 270 miles on a single charge as the 2021 Mach-E GT gets an EV range of 235 miles. This is how the Mach-E will become a leader of the new Ford electric car models by setting the bar of EV range expectations. With a 150kw DC fast charger, you should be able to get 47 miles of range with only 10 minutes of charge with the Mach-E. In conjunction with this EV addition, Ford also started rolling out the largest electric vehicle nationwide public charging network. This equals a total of over 12,000 locations with 35,000 plugs. That totals more than the other automakers attempting to compete.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Reduces Range Anxiety with Intelligent Range

Just recently, Ford addressed the range anxiety surrounding the Mustang Mach-E with the reveal of a brand new technology. This new tech is called Intelligent Range. The innovative Intelligent Range technology can accurately predict how much range is left based on past driving behavior, weather forecasting, and aggregate crowd-sourced data from other Mustang Mach-E drivers. Over-the-air updates will be provided in the future which will enable more accurate predictions with the addition of real-time traffic conditions and the evaluation of terrain/elevation on any given route. This will let drivers know if they need to charge up beforehand. Furthermore, Ford revealed that the Ford Roadside Assistance program will tow your Mach-E to your home charger, the closest public charging station, or an electric-certified Ford dealership within 35 miles. Say goodbye to range anxiety.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Will Offer Hands-Free Driving Technology

The new hands-free driving technology called Active Drive Assist in-action available on the all-electric 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E *The Active Drive Assist hands-free driving technology shown in-action.

It's officially been revealed and confirmed. Introducing the hands-free driving technology dubbed Active Drive Assist. The software is impressive. Active Drive Assist will allow drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel and take their feet off the gas/brake pedals while the Mach-E drives itself across select major highways. This new hands-free driving tech utilizes exterior cameras and sensors to monitor the road ahead and surrounding vehicles. Also, a small interior, infrared camera makes sure the driver is alert and always watching the road ahead. Active Drive Assist will shut off if the driver looks away for too long. This is a direct response to the concern/accidents surrounding other autopilot technologies where drivers tend to put too much trust into these systems and stop paying attention to the road ahead. Several drivers have even been caught sleeping in the driver seat while the autopilot systems are engaged, which is an accident waiting to happen.

Active Drive Assist won't allow a driver to let go of the steering wheel for an extended period while simultaneously requiring the driver to keep their focus on the road. Currently, the Active Drive Assist will work on more than 100,000 miles of highways throughout the United States and Canada with future system updates to incorporate more highways over time. Active Drive Assist will be offered as an option on the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E at the time of its debut in late 2020 but will also be sold separately towards the end of 2021. Mach-E drivers will be able to install the hands-free driving software through a download either at home or at your local Ford dealership.
